Headphones have two major styles called the “around the ears” and the “in-ear” designs. There is much controversial surrounding which one of the two is the better product. There are several pros and cons associated with both types of headphones. Therefore, you have to compare the differences and decide for yourself which one would be the best for you. The around the ears or circumaural headphones are designed to fit completely around the ears. The in-ear or earbuds were made to fit in the ears or sit just outside the ear canal. Below you will find both the pros and cons that have been associated with these two types of headphones.

Pros associated with the circumaural (around the ears) headphones:

• They’re larger than the ear forming a seal that completely encloses the ear.
• They block environmental sounds from entering and interfering with the sound quality.
• The bass sounds better with this design.
• Others around you normally cannot hear what you’re listening to.
• They’re the prefect choice for recording studios.

Cons:

• They’re heavier than the in-ear designs.
• They can feel hot and sweaty especially when worn for long periods of time.
• They’re very noticeable.
• The headband can push against glasses or jewelry and become uncomfortable.
• They’re harder to carry around places due to their size.

Pros associated with the earbuds (in-ear) headphones:

• They have a very lightweight design.
• They’re small and inconspicuous making them less noticeable.
• Some styles are more comfortable to wear for long periods of time.
• Normally, the cords are longer for convenience.
• There have more decorative colors to choose from.
• They don’t have headbands to deal with.
• They’re very durable.

Cons:

• Environmental noises are easily heard.
• They can be difficult to keep in place.
• Some styles can be hard to put in place or remove.
• Some people claim they make their ears sore.
• Many people find this design to be intrusive.
• They are often turned up too loud to drown out the environmental noises, which is bad for your hearing.

After comparing the pros and cons of both types of headphones it should be easier for you to decide which one would be the better product for you personally. Of course, this is a matter of opinion and will partly depend on which devices the headphones will be used with and where you plan to use them the most. For example, will you be using them at home with your video games or in public?

Headphones are so common today that you see them just about everywhere you go. It’s important to buy headphones that are comfortable for you. Don’t choose a certain style simply because someone else said they were the best. Learn as much as you can about the two styles available and then try them out for yourself. This way you’ll be able to choose the one you feel most comfortable wearing.
