How good are Bose headphones?

I’m thinking of asking for a pair of Bose headphones for Christmas, but I was wondering do they really improve the sound quality of music even when they are plugged into a regular old stereo? I have a JVC that I bought three years ago and I just don’t want my family to waste their money if it’s not going to improve the sound.
